Book presentation at Tsinghua University on June 11: a joint event of the business online community China Value and the publishing company China Citic Press. A panel discussion moderated by prominent Internet researcher Hu Yong tried to define the potential and limits of the crowdsourcing approach in business, science and design. Jeff Howe joint the discussion by Internet. Jeff Howe joined the discussion via Internet. He was quite astonished to know from Zhao Jiamin, one of the founder of the Open Translation community Yeeyan that there are big crowdsourcing projects undertaken, e.g. the translation of Kevin Kelly’s Out of Control, to be published in fall.

But this won’t entail any physical travel; the mode of transportation will be satellite hook-up and fiber optic cable, and the stops along the way will be 20 locations, each one of which stands for a theme of crucial importance to our future.

Translations are added by members for the benefit of everyone without the need for inaccurate translation tools. Here we aim to provide translation through meaningful context. Social Translator describes itself as ” a free and currently non-profit community, with the aim of translating the web bit by bit for everyone to enjoy. One of the our main projects is to translate videos on the web for everyone, and we feel this is the first time such a project has been started” – obviously they have not yet heard of DotSub or TED to China.
